A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning

'For Beatrice,

Darling, dearest, dead.'

Honestly? I remember the writing style being better. Maybe this is a case of it being, like most children series, a slow burn in complexity. I'll just have to read and see.

At the start, it felt like EVERY line was cut to have 'said [name]' in the middle! It was a bad beginning, indeed. I didn't notice it as much by the end, though.

This book is still good! While it holds back in complexity, the darkness is startling remote. The scene where Klaus is struck across the face with spectators gleefuly goading the perpetrator on, and the remarks the bald man makes to Violet (ewwww GET AWAY FROM HER!!!!!), was so twisted.

The eye imagery is STRONG here. It's curious to me that Olaf is so obsessed with the VFD symbol. He's literally carved the logo repeatedly in his office floor, on his front door and has it everywhere in his house. Seriously, this guy has something wrong with him. Well, obviously... I meant in the sense VFD must've done some fucked up shit for the volunteers to act how they do. Anyways, my point when I started this paragraph was I think it drives the point that the fire-starting side people are still VFD, and that fact is important to them. At least, it is to Olaf.

The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels

WOAH. I can't believe it's taken me so long to read this!

It was a bit slow in the beginning, but in the second half I could literally not put it down. I spoiled myself twice on major things while flipping forward for a page number... however I was still surprised because there are a million other twists and turns! It always keeps you guessing on whether or not it’s supernatural, even in the end there's some things that are unexplainable. (Rather like how Oliver was SUPPOSED to write his book hehe.) For that reason, though, I dislike the extra scene; I feel like it steers way too much to the supernatural side.

This book is really clever. If you're a fan of mystery I totally reccomend it!

comics/manga
Spider-Man: Blue

Perfect read for Valentine's Day! Haha!! His silly valentine!!! Hahahahahaha!!!!

Am I part of the 'Peter being stuck in highschool in the public's eye' problem... It's not my fault there's so many charming retellings of his early years!

I thought Kraven orchestrating everything was stupid, though. The way he's draw is really strange. It just feels... weird.

Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #66-72

Oughh I love the old comics.. Pretty boy Parker come back... Gwen Stacy come back to me.....

Look Back

TRAGEDY, YIPPEE! Actually, I think this remained too hopeful to call it a tragedy. I just love tragedy, so...

Fujino and Kyomoto's relationship is so cute. They literally found each in a different universe... Kyomoto's struggle to live the life she wants in the face of anxiety was really relatable. Her decision to go to art school and seperate herself a bit from Fujino hit me hard. That scene was great.

'Not to mention there's no way you can handle college life on your own!'
'I-I can too! I'll learn to!'

Even though Fujino's kind of an asshole, she's so hard to hate. I think this a common theme with Fujimoto characters: they're all impossibly charming.

Maybe I need to start drawing again........

Goodbye, Eri

Confusing and wonderful. What was fake and what was real? All I know is that knowing Eri through Yuta's lens was a beautiful experience.

Spider-Verse (Amazing Spider-Man 2014 #9-15)

The pacing was really off. TO BE FAIR, I did breeze through this in a day so that might be affecting my view but… It just felt like it was trying to do too much in too little issues, while somehow also as if nothing was happening. All the major problems are dealt with off-screen, in other comic series! I get the whole point of events is that the storyline is spread out through different comic series, but I still think it’s stupid.

Moving along to the more positive side: I found the Inheritors very interesting. If you examine my favourites in media, you’ll find there’s a trend of messed up siblings. I also loved Superior Spider-Man!!! I forgot he was in this. His reaction to finding out what Doc Ock did and his ‘pep’talk to Ben in #13 was great. Too bad neither got a happy ending (well, Superior does but I doubt he’d agree).

I thought the Inheritors fate was a bit ehhh??? Like, on second thought it is basically just prison but I don’t know… They’re forced to survive on disgusting food with only each other for company for however long they live, which is a while, maybe even forever as long as they have food and aren’t harmed. Since Ben stayed there for decades I’ll assume there’s a toilet, shower and some sort of entertainment, so it’s not all bad. Oh, also, can you guess when the big ass spiders that have been there the entire time, actually, which they conveniently can feed on (CRAZY that they just chose spider totems to eat for the fun of it) were mentioned? IN A DIFFERENT SERIES. OF COURSE!!!!

Anyways, back to the Inheritors ending: It’s just that Daemos was shown to be shaken by their mercy and is thrown into the prison while actively asking for an explanation. Karn, on the other hand, is just let off since he hasn't killed anyone Actually Important. Although, his ending is still pretty messed up… he’s forced to weave the web for eons until time loops on itself and he gets killed? Just to take up the mantle again??? Maybe we’ll get more on him in Secret Wars: Spider-Verse. That sentence sums this up, really; It just made me want to read other comics.

Favourite cover

#10. It's THE iconic image of Superior Spider-Man, how could I not.

Venom: Recursion (Venom 2021 #1-5)

This probably wasn't the best run to start with as my first ever Venom series since it’s quite based on things that happened previously. However I think what happened before is made pretty clear, so it’s not a big deal. I thought it was really fun and I’m excited to pick up the next volume to see where it’s headed!

The colouring really stood out to me: during alarms everything was RED, in the night everything was some type of blue and etc. I felt like each page kept to a consistent colour which made it seem really put together.

Favourite issue

#3 brought up a lot of interesting thoughts about Venom, both as itself and in relation to Eddie. The symbiote as something that is Made to be violent thrusted into a guardian role and having to deal with it... Quite yummy.

#5 was very satisfying because it answered a lot of the questions I had, and I liked the new characters.

Favourite cover

I though all the covers were cool, except for #5 which I wasn't really a fan of. When seeing #3 I instantly went 'wow that's SICK', so it gets top spot.

Favourite alt cover

#1 by Peach Momoko contains Shape, which I am weak to.

Quotes

And yet here, I am a dog– A dog, Eddie Brock. Tethered by the flimsiest of chains.
I find myself leashed by a dead man’s longing for his son.
(You’re an angel, I’m a dog.)
Venom symbiote, #3. Mitski, I'm Your Man.

I may not be your father, Dylan Brock… but I’m all that's left of him.

Venom symbiote, #3.

Damn you... Eddie Brock. Every time he looks at me, he expects to see you within... How, Eddie...? How do I show him that I’m still holding all the pieces you left–?

Venom symbiote, #4.

movies
The Magic Faraway Tree

A family movie especially for parents. Tired of the horrors of the current world? Well, just run away with your three children to a desolate barn with no gas or electricity! The ultimate escapist fantasy!

They're so determined to have this plot with the parents and fuckass tomato sauce. Which isn't neccessarily bad, but the real world is full of 'haha kids are addicted to screens and don't know what exercise is' jokes. Boreeeeeee!

The scenes in the Magic Faraway Tree were fun. I love Moonface. Despite being 2 hours long, everything went so quickly. A lot of plot points felt very surface level. LIKE OMG: I can't believe I got fucking selective mutism-baited. Fran just started talking, like, 15 minutes in??? Let me guess, her mutism was because of that damn 5G.......

Beth is funny and the only sane one there. Everyone clap for insufferable girls.

Spider-Man (2002)

But since we're all gonna die, there's one more secret I feel I have to share with you: I do not care for the Raimi Spider-Man movies. (/ref)

Okay, I lied for the meme. I love Spider-Man 2 and this is certainly a Good Film. It's just, ughhhh, I don't like Tobey Maguire. I'm sure he's a great person and all, but Peter Parker he is not! He's so awkard. Every time he opens his mouth I want to die from second hand embarrasement.

I just don'tttt careeeee about Mary Jane and Peter's relationship. They never give me a reason to! All they do is tell me they're so perfect together, they love each other, without showing me why. When do these two have a normal conversation? Something that's not solely Peter mooning about her, saving her or relationship drama?

Regardless, this is pretty good. Willem Dafoe adds major points, of course. If you focus on the solely Spider-Man bits, it's pretty spectacular.

Terrifier

It's a splatter film and it splatters all over the place!! The short run time is probably due to it being indie, but I'm glad. Something with the plot 'guy kills people in gruesome ways' really doesn't need to be longer than an hour and a half. Looking over at Terrifier 2 & 3...

Art's manner brings comedy while also making him unpredictable. I mean, obviously he's going to kill them eventually, but he keeps you guessing on when! And how; I was NOT expecting him to just start shooting!? I was really rooting for Tara to kill that asshole. </3

Arthur Christmas

Something something Grandsanta giving up his selfish dream for his grandson, Malcolm giving up the role he's been clinging to for his sons, Steve giving up his ambition for his younger brother who just hopes to make a child happy.

Shout out to Steve my anxious king!!! The way Malcolm treats his kids makes me so mad.

Spirited

Not as good as I remembered; It just KEPT GOING and most of the songs I didn't really like. The choreography was really cool though. Shoutout to the Ghost of Christmas Future for having selective mutism.

My main issue was the romances. I think this is a case of me Not Getting dating. This is something I've been thinking about often recently. When I started college I was glad because I thought people would be less Weird about dating. Yet it's still the same obsession. Someone said they had a crush on me after 3 days of talking! I can't really imagine dating anybody, but most especially not someone I've only known for 3 days! I thought this was because of my selective mutism but some people still seem to date despite having trouble speaking around them. Of course it could still be my SM despite that, different people experience it differently and all that but... I don't know. Maybe I'll get it when I'm older.

Back to actually talking about the movie!! Present and Kimberly I can understand for the plot relevance. Present's desire for a loving life and to push him to retire. CLINT AND PAST HOWEVER... They fucked once! While he still thought it was a dream!! Did they really need to date!!!?

Aside from that, I wonder who founded this organisation? Santa???

Five Nights at Freddy's 2

I was SO EXCITED to see Henry guys, you don't even know, just for him... TO BE IN ONE SCENE!!!!! Heartbroken. It doesn't help my sister told me today that he apparently has a speech after the second set of credits, which we didn't see! Sigh...

At least the music box he made for Charlie was important. The letter with Charlie saying she forgives him for being busy, and then now... :,) When Vanny said she blames all parents for her death I thought 'ooo is she gonna go after Henry' but she just goes after random families...? I suppose it's sweet in a way.

I don't really like how she's evil in this since the whole point in the games is how kind she is. Charlotte being trapped in the emotional state of her death is a cool idea, though, reminds me of Dayshift at Freddy's. The opening scene with her was AWESOME. The design of her as a child is so perfect. I also get they needed a unique antagonist. If Michael was controlling them it would've just been like William again. Although, maybe that repitition would've served the family drama thing. Hm. Michael I'm less bothered by being evil since we already have a Mike and good Vanny.

The ending I didn't really like, mainly because I was confused. Charlotte gets defeated, hooray, end of conflict. Except, oh no it was Michael the whole time? Or just part of the time?? I think he just let Charlotte out, but somehow he can control the toy animatronics too? Which is only really so the original animatronics get a chance to aura farm.

I feel like I'm complainining a lot... I enjoyed it, so it's a good film to me. The references to Ultimate Custom Night lines were neat. Also, I saw two really cool cosplays and a couple people with FNAF headbands!

Violent Night

My sister and I tried to explain what genre this movie is to our mum, she said horror and I said action. It doesn't have suspenseful scenes like a typical horror, but the kills are much more gory and creative than a typical action... It's like a slasher film from the slasher's perspective? Lines between genres can blur alot.

The Book of Life

I rewatch this every year yet Manolo singing Creep ALWAYS jumpscares me. RIP to the trio, they would've loved being in a polycule. My favourite part is when Joaqin said 'it's Joaqin time' and Joaqined all over the place.

To be serious: the apology song is my favourite scene. Manolo puts the shadow of his family legacy to rest by asking for forgiveness from EVERY BULL HIS FAMILY’S EVER KILLED, defying his family's expectations; a god and his own fear of being himself in the process, AND it has beautiful animation to boot. What's not to love?

Back to the Future

This movie was stressing me out, but it was fun. I don't really get the hype though. You can tell this is from the 80's because the cars are so beautiful... and uhh maybe because the mum's shown to be better by being skinny.

It's good Marty had to go, like, almost immediately; I feel like having memories of a completely different life and none of the same memories your family has would screw with you.

Marty was so cringefail with that guitar. It sure was great that no one else was using those roads while they were reaching 88mph!

tv shows
A Series of Unfortunate Events (Season 1) *

MOST BANGER INTRO EVER! NEVER SKIPPED!!! The visuals are so sick (EYE MONTAGE) and although some arc's verses are definitely better than others, they're still cool. Everything about the dedication scenes are great and melancholy.

I think the way it differs from the book is interesting. It shows you everyone's perspective, so you get to see all the spy shit that's happening behind the Baudelaire's backs. This means the mystery is a little lessened, but I prefer it. It makes sense with how long the episodes are, and it's just more fun!

Not that it's bad the books are 'less fun'. The books and series are going for different vibes, I feel. This is a lot more lighthearted - the dining scene in particular stood out to me. While in the book the troupe are entertained by Olaf's abuse, they're shocked into silence here. The troupe's gross comments are toned down too, though I guess Olaf makes up for it with the 'I'll touch whatever I want' line. GET AWAY FROM HER!!!

MOST BANGER ENDING SONG EVER! LOOPED FOREVER!!!

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (Season 1)

I like watching MLP because it makes me think 'wow friendship is awesome', and I go talk to my friends and think 'wow my friends are awesome'. Love and joy for everypony!!!!!

Spider-Man (1994) (Season 1)

Smiles so so wide. I love this show. Best Spider-Man cartoon, and you can't fight me about that because I'll never change my mind.
